Beef prospects tastier than for lamb
4 Feb 2005

An analysis by Meat & Livestock Corporation said that the easing of the drought should lead to an increase of eight per cent in beef production in Australia in 2005, while exports would also rise by eight per cent. The MLA said that the incentive to expand cattle herds had rarely been stronger, with record prices and many properties understocked. The MLA said Australian producers could expect to maintain a high share of Japan’s beef market, given the limits placed by Japan on US beef, which may only export beef from younger cattle and only with birth records, which are rare in the US. The MLA said it expected lamb production to increase by 9.5 per cent, and lamb prices to fall.
