Brazilian beef escapes biosecurity safety net
17 Feb 2005

Quarantine officials allowed the import of a small quantity of beef from Brazil late last year, even though the US, Canada and Japan all ban the entry of Brazilian beef. Officials from Biosecurity Australia and the Department of Agriculture told a Senate hearing that 20 cartons of beef were imported. Heinz Watties disposed of two cartons in the secure industrial area at the Wagga Wagga tip. AQIS incinerated the remaining 18 cartons of the Brazilian beef last week. All beef imports from Brazil have since been suspended.
