Snowy dams an option for irrigation water storage
23 Feb 2005

Farmers in north-eastern Victoria and southern New South Wales might have new options to preserve scarce water. Rather than holding leftover water in dams on their properties, farmers could store the water within existing reservoirs that comprise the Snowy Mountains hydro scheme. A new business, Lakes R Us, part owned and managed by former consumer regulator chief Hank Spiers, wants to rent the 800,000 megalitres within Snowy Hydro's dams. The proposal aims to help farmers better manage state laws that prevent or restrict them from carrying over unused water allocations from one year to the next.
