Beef producers seek to hold Japan export share 8 Mar 2005
Federal agriculture minister Warren Truss said Australian beef producers should not expect US producers to steal much share of the beef market in Japan, once Japan allows US producers to sell beef once again. The discovery of mad cow disease in a US cattle herd in December 2003 caused Japan to ban American beef. That induced a big rise in demand for Australian beef, with beef exports from Australia to Japan increasing from about 280,000 tonnes in 2003 to 393,000 tonnes last year - a jump of more than 40 per cent. The US accounted for about 45 per cent of Japan's total beef imports in 2003, but Australian producers took up the slack last year and supplied 90 per cent of Japan's imported beef.
