Kuwait agrees to quarantine facility for live sheep imports 17 Mar 2005
The federal government reached a new agreement with Kuwait which would control the export of live animals, predominantly sheep, a trade worth more than $70 million to Australian farmers. In 2004 more than one million Australian sheep were shipped live to Kuwait. It follows the Cormo Express affair in 2003 when more than 50,000 sheep were stopped from being unloaded into Saudi Arabia on health grounds. Under the agreement, Kuwait will provide a quarantine facility where animals can be held in the event of disputes over their condition.
