Lamb co-op looks to urban fringe for labour

Lamb exporter WAMMCO, a farmer-owned cooperative, said it was looking at doubling its processing capacity over the next three years. Lamb growers in Western Australia expect to increase production of prime lambs by 50 per cent. The co-op said any expansion was unlikely at its existing works at inland Katanning, which was already struggling with the labour shortages. Any expansion may be located north of Perth, and was likely to cost at least $10 million to $20 million. The average size of the lambs it bought had jumped over the past four years from 18kg to 22kg as producers changed their breeding, feeding and marketing programs to capture the higher prices on offer. The average price paid had more than doubled since 1999 to around $75 a head.
