Saudi’s agree to resumption of sheep imports 6 May 2005
Live sheep exports to Saudi Arabia will resume, following resolution of disputes that date back to the refusal in 2003 by a Saudi importer to accept a shipment transported on the carrier Cormo Express. Saudi Arabia signed a memorandum of understanding under which it promises to unload any shipment within 36 hours of berthing and to place livestock in a quarantine station should any health concerns arise. Sheep growers blame suspension of the trade for a decline in the price of sheep per head of between $10 and $15. Exporters do not expect any quick return to past export levels, due to a shortage of livestock carriers.
