Cattle prices take off after Victorian rains 15 Jun 2005
Rains in Victoria have pushed cattle prices higher and reined in the cost of hay. The rain means that the dry-sowing gamble by many grain growers the previous week paid off, after up to 70mm fell in the Wimmera and up to 50mm in the Mallee in the past week. Nearly all parts of Victoria and southern NSW shared in the good rains, with East Gippsland the main exception. In cattle markets, the price of supplementary-fed yearlings and top quality vealers increased by up to 20 cents a kilogram at northern sales.
