Beef exports enjoy quasi monopoly in Japanese market
28 Jun 2005

Japan Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries figures show that since Japan banned beef from Canada and the US in 2003 because of mad cow disease, Australia enjoyed a 91 per cent quasi-monopoly of the Japanese beef import market, leaving a 7.5 per cent share to New Zealand and trickles to a half-dozen other countries. In fiscal 2004, Australia exported 393,471 metric tonnes of beef to Japan, worth $2.2 billion. Japan will allow some US beef imports from October, though a new mad cow scare may be affecting consumer willingness to buy US beef.
