Cropping and mixed farms more productive than pure livestock farms
5 Jul 2005

Productivity doubled within Australia’s agricultural sector over the past 30 years, a study by the Productivity Commission found. The Commission said productivity growth increased most vigorously in cropping (with average productivity growth of 3.3 per cent each year) compared with mixed crops/livestock farms (2.5 per cent a year), beef (1.8 per cent) and dairy (1.7 per cent). The Commission said productivity growth in the sheep and sheep-beef industry has been rather modest and insufficient, on average, to offset the deteriorating terms of trade for those sectors. Productivity growth tends to be higher on large farms.
