Livestock producers take on the sugar set over ethanol 27 Jul 2005
A coalition of livestock industry producers said lobbying by sugar cane farmers for subsidies for grain-based ethanol fuels would displace the production of grains for livestock. The Livestock Feed Grain Users Group said ethanol plants would compete unfairly for limited grain supplies with livestock industries. The group said the current excise rebate to domestic ethanol producers is a subsidy equivalent to almost the entire input cost of feed grains. The 38 cents a litre rebate is equivalent to more than $150 per tonne of grain. The group said a 10 per cent ethanol blend, if sourced from grain, would consume most of Australia's annual barley and sorghum crop.
