Farmers grizzle over cattle tags 2 Aug 2005
The beef industry is grumbling about the reliability and costs of the national livestock identification scheme. One livestock agent in Roma in Queensland said drafting animals in the sale yard took three times as long under the new system. Electronic sensors used to record cattle movements in sale yards often failed, according to the agent. The Cattle Council of Australia said the complaints were teething problems. Some producers say the technology issues have delayed delivery of stock for sale and pushed up prices. But the Meat and Livestock Corporation said the issue had only a marginal affect on cattle prices.
