Close call on foot and mouth
3 Aug 2005

An SBS television Dateline investigation reported that Australia came close to catching foot and mouth disease. Australia allows imports of beef products from some farming regions in Brazil deemed free of foot and mouth, even though the disease is prevalent in other regions. The credibility of the zones was at the centre of a Senate Inquiry earlier this year when Liberal Senator Bill Heffernan raised allegations that Heinz, which at that time had an import permit for Brazilian beef, had dumped the product at the Wagga tip.
