Booyong co-op shuts pig meat facility 12 Aug 2005
The Northern Cooperative Meat Company said it would shut its pig meat abattoir at Booyong in northern New South Wales. The company blamed the closure on the decision by the quarantine authority Bio-Security Australia last year to allow imports of raw pig meat from a number of countries. The boning operation at Booyong opened in September 2003 with a federal government subsidy. The company also said the disparity in road weight limits between New South Wales and Queensland also contributed to the boning room facility ceasing operations. Trucks in Queensland can carry about 240 pigs per truck, but in New South Wales trucks can carry only about 200 pigs per truck.
