Rising meat prices offsets falling demand for live exports
15 Aug 2005

Australian live cattle exports for the 2004/05 financial year fell by nine per cent to 624,202 head – the lowest level in 10 years. Meat and Livestock Australia said export volumes were 480,000 head, or 38pc, below the record of just over 1 million head two years ago. But with cattle prices generally higher, the value of exports increased by one per cent to a record $464 million. Indonesia and Japan were sources of increasing demand, but exports to most other markets fell.
