Fortunes fade for longline fishers
19 Aug 2005

The operators of one Australia’s largest fishing fleets has fallen into the red. The Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics said the 135 operators in the longline fleet – which stretches from the tip of Cape York south to the Victoria-South Australia border – earned an average of $62,000 in 2002. Last year the fishers incurred an average loss of $22,000. ABARE said the change in fortunes of the operators was due to the appreciating Australian dollar. ABARE said there was no evidence to suggest stocks of yellowfin and bigeye tuna were under threat, but there were strong indications of depletions of broadbill swordfish off southern Queensland.
