SAFF wants a further levy on farm income
25 Aug 2005

Farmers in South Australia could be funding projects from next year if 80 per cent of farmers approve proposals for a voluntary commodity levy. The SA Farmers’ Federation has put forward a hypothetical figure of a levy at 0.1 per cent on commodity production. The levy would be administered by SAFF, which would use the money for a range of "development activities", including support of commodity areas, environmental sustainability, research and development, agribusiness support, marketing and trade brokerage, infrastructure and essential community services.

A 0.1 per cent levy would equate to 15.5 cents a tonne on grain, six cents a head for each sheep and 55 cents for each cow.
