1 Sep 2005

Beef cattle farming, grape growing and stone fruit are the only categories of farming where the number of individual farms is increasing, a snapshot of the farm sector compiled by the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows. The ABS said the number of beef cattle farms increased to 35,000 in 2004 from 33,000 in 1999. Overall, the number of farms in Australia fell to 130,000 in 2004 from 145,000 in 1999. Farms numbers decreased in sheep farming and grain growing.
