Orange juice imports double in a year
27 Sep 2005

The tonnage price for orange grown in the Sunraysia district of north-western Victoria dropped from about $400 last year to about $200 this year, and about $100 less than the cost of production. As a result, the region’s growers expect to dump up to 36,000 tonnes of navels this year, with most going to feed sheep and cattle. Less than two per cent of output has gone to juice processors, who mainly use imported concentrate.

Processors imported 45,800 tonnes of processed orange juice in 2004/05, double the volume imported the year before.
