Cattle shortage closes Bindaree Beef 30 Sep 2005
Lot feeders and re-stockers are fighting for quality lines of cattle, sending prices steadily higher. The NSW Yearling Steer Indicator for steers up to 400 kilograms reached 232 cents per kilo last week, up from 228 cents per kilo a month earlier. The shortage is hurting the Queensland processing industry. Bindaree Beef at Murgon temporarily closed its doors, though the meat processor says they will reopen in the future and that the plant has been operating profitably. Bindaree Beef says they are still buying cattle and sending them to the company's Inverell plant.
