SA egg producers at breaking point 21 Dec 2005
Some producers in South Australia are selling eggs for 79 cents a dozen and healthy hens are being slaughtered. Yet the market price in SA is even lower. The South Australian Farmers Federation said interstate producers were dumping eggs for as little as 40 cents a dozen to local distributors, who in turn sell the eggs to small stores and butchers for about 80 cents a dozen. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission said a preliminary investigation allegations of predatory pricing in the egg industry had not shown any evidence to support the claims.
