Beef export prices to fall slightly
5 Jan 2006

ABARE predicts that export prices for beef and export volumes to Japan will both fall about ten per cent, as the US resumes sales to Japan. Industry experts believe that the US will struggle to supply meat under the Japanese government’s 20 month age limit restrictions. Since 2003, when Japan and Korea shut out US imports because of BSE (mad cow) detections in a herd in Washington state, Australia’s share of the Japanese beef market has climbed from 50 per cent to ninety per cent.
