Japan reimposes ban on US beef
23 Jan 2006

Japan reimposed a ban on American beef imports only a month after being lifted, a decision that will sustain demand for Australian beef. The decision follows the discovery of spinal cord, a forbidden "specific risk material", in an air-freighted consignment of US beef. Australian cattle herds are still free of bovine spongiform encephalopathy, the so-called mad cow disease.
