Sheep sales below average 7 Feb 2006
Meat and Livestock Australia said the number of lambs sold through saleyards in January was steady with December at around 663,000 head, and consistent with the five-year average while the number of sheep sold increased by 12 per cent to 416,000 head, but still 20 per cent below the five-year average. Sheep numbers in NSW, WA and SA saleyards during January were significantly below the past five years’ average. Rainfall across the Tablelands, Central West and Riverina regions of NSW during January led farmers to hold back sheep, with many producers keen to hold onto their ewes and wethers in order to rebuild flocks, or to take advantage of the plentiful feed available. In recent weeks there has also been a boost in wool prices, which is another incentive for producers to hold onto their sheep.
