Beef production down, weights up 14 Feb 2006
Australian beef and veal production fell slightly in 2005 to 2.09 million tonnes and adult cattle slaughter rates also fell, down 3 per cent to 7.6 million head. Victorian production and slaughter rates both fell 9 per cent in 2005 said the ABS, as Queensland slaughter rates and production were both up, largely driven by lot-fed exports to north Asia. Average cattle carcass weights were up 2 per cent to 270 kg, 11 per cent higher than ten years ago.
