Live cattle exports to Egypt suspended
27 Feb 2006

The export of live cattle to Egypt has been banned until the Egyptian Government proves its abattoirs are not severely mistreating animals. The suspension is in response to a broadcast on the Nine Network’s 60 minutes program last night showed footage of cattle having their leg tendons slashed to disable them before slaughter at Cairo's Bassatin abattoir. Federal Agriculture Minister Peter McGauran said the practice was "totally unacceptable" and the matter was being investigated. Exports of 12,000 Australian cattle to Egypt last year were valued at $11 million. Australia's total export of livestock is worth $700 million a year.
