Cattle barons over-invest in feedlots
28 Feb 2006

Grain-fed beef now accounts for more than 40 per cent of total beef exports, and the proportion is likely to rise further. The Australian Lot Feeders Association said feedlots fattened 2.6 million head of cattle in 2005, up from 1.5million 10 years before. Investment boosted the capacity of Australia's feedlots to more than 1.1million head by December 2005, though only about 734,000 cattle were on feed. The utilisation rate fell to 67 per cent in 2005, down from 78 per cent in 2004.
