Beef slaughters up, lamb down
7 Mar 2006

National slaughter rates for lamb continue to decline according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. 1.5 million head were slaughtered in January, down for the sixth consecutive month and the lowest rate since March 2005. The trend estimate for Lamb meat production was also down to the lowest level since February 2005 at just under 31,000 tonnes. Beef slaughtering rates were up to 620,800 head and beef meat production rose for the fourth consecutive month to a six month high of almost 169,000 tonnes.
