Mad cow disease on the decline
29 Mar 2006

There has been an annual 50 per cent decline globally in cases of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) over the past three years says the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation. There were 474 cases recorded worldwide in 2005, down from several tens of thousands a decade ago. Five human deaths were recorded in 2005 from the variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, all of these in the United Kingdom, down from nine in 2004. Over the last ten years there have been 150 deaths, almost all in the UK.
