SA egg prices to rise say producers
10 Apr 2006

Egg producers in South Australia say prices are set to rise because they have slaughtered about 100,000 laying hens and cannot meet high seasonal demand. The chickens were culled as egg farmers cut costs in the face of interstate competition. Valley Poultry said it could not put prices up beyond $23 / box because Meggles in Victoria was selling for $16 / box. Valley says its needs $32 / box to make a reasonable profit. The Australian Egg Corporation will meet the SA Agriculture minister on Tuesday.
