Egg farmers want money for bigger cages
24 Apr 2006

Egg industry producers are asking the federal government for help o help ease the financial burden placed on farmers forced to construct larger cages for their birds. Farmers will be forced to increase the size of bird cages by 2008 due to concerns over the treatment of caged hens. The new cage size regulations were imposed by state and federal governments in 2000. Australian Egg Industry Association representatives said government had failed to respond to their proposed $23 million compensation package for farmers.
