Revised marine parks spare scallop fishery
8 May 2006

The final network of South East Region Marine Protected Areas reduces the impact on the fishing industry by more than 90 per cent from the original proposal, while increasing the protected areas by over 20 per cent. The final proposal increases the MPA area by 24 per cent to about 226,000 square kilmetres. More than 20 changes have been made to the draft boundaries proposed in December 2005. Under the new boundaries, there should be no impact on the the scallop industry, and thus on fishing towns in Tasmania and Victoria.
