Tasmania eases permit system for mainland cattle 18 May 2006
Farmers in Tasmania importing cattle from the mainland will no longer require a special permit. Farmers must still test all beef cattle for Enzootic Bovine Leucosis - a form of blood cancer more commonly found in dairy cattle. The test costs $8 a head and take three days to process the results. Producers are now able to import cattle from "long-established mainland herds" known to have no history of certain diseases. Each animal must also pass a veterinary health check before entering Tasmania, he said.
