Queensland limits development on Cape York river systems
5 Jun 2006

Graziers and local Aboriginal land councils say they will act together to defeat moves by the Queensland government to ban development on remote river systems. The legislation has been implemented to prevent any development or use of river systems away from the state's large population centres. But Aboriginal leader Noel Pearson said the legislation would prevent economic development in indigenous communities and disrupt cultural traditions. Pastoralists complain that the legislation was introduced without consultation and prevents them from making improvements to their cattle stations.
