NLIS audit to trace phantom tags
22 Jun 2006

Agriculture minister Peter McGauran ordered a national audit of the National Livestock Identification Scheme following criticisms last week from the Australian Beef Association. The Association says that the NLIS scheme, which is administered by Meat and Livestock Australia has issued 38 million tags, although the national herd is about 27 million head. The NLIS said the 38 million tags included tags issued a property code, but not attached to cattle and tags taken from slaughtered cattle.
