Competition coming from China and Brazil 5 Jul 2006
Farmers in developing nations are expected to win market share from the big agricultural producers over the next 15 years. The annual study by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation says that China, Brazil and other developing economies are outpacing the world leaders in increased production and lower costs. The markets for oilseeds, rice, sugar, pigmeat, beef, butter and milk powders are expected to be most impacted. Australia is expected to win US market share in wheat, but Black Sea producers would provide greater competition. Australia, NZ and the EU are expected to remain the world’s biggest dairy producers. Australia is expected to lose share in some beef markets.
