Free range egg substitution racket exposed 1 Aug 2006
The Australian Egg Corporation said that only 79 of its more than 400 members had been granted licences under the Egg Corp Assured auditing system, a system set up by the industry two years ago. Up to 200,000 factory-farmed eggs a day are being passed off as free-range in a widespread substitution racket, misleading customers and netting producers $13 million a year. The Egg Corporation estimates there are 1.7 million free range hens, but the NSW Free Range Egg Producers Association, says there are only one million.
