Sheep meat production a record
7 Sep 2006

ABARE forecast that the value of Australia’s sheep meat production (including live sheep exports) would exceed $2.2 billion in 2005/06, surpassing the previous record of $2.1 billion set in 2001/02. ABARE said that in 2005/06, around 38,700 broadacre farms had more than 200 sheep. Around 75 per cent of these farms produced lambs for slaughter. Around a third of all farms producing slaughter lambs are classified as specialist slaughter lamb producers. These farms accounted for 43 per cent of Australia’s slaughter lamb turnoff.

Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics, 07/09/06
