KR Castlemaine to close down in Toowoomba

KR Castlemaine will sell its abattoir and smallgoods processing factory in Toowoomba, and consolidate operations at Castlemaine in Victoria. The company had offered to help them relocate to Castlemaine or to find other jobs. Established as the Darling Downs Bacon Co-operative Association in 1911, the Toowoomba-based ham, bacon and smallgoods producer sells under brands such as KR Castlemaine and Huttons. The business was sold to Asian tycoon Denis Jen in 2002 for more than $50 million and a year later it was merged with Castlemaine Bacon Co of Victoria.
