This drought more like 1982 than 2002
30 Oct 2006

The Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Rural Economics predicted the combined wheat, barely and canola crops will struggle to make 13.6 million tonnes, the smallest yield since the 12.1 million tonnes during the 1994/95 drought and one million tonnes less than the 2002/03 dry. "In many areas, seasonal conditions appear to be worse than during the last major drought, in 2002-03, and comparable to the 1982-83 drought," the ABARE report says. Beef cattle production is forecast to fall by 13 per cent and sheep meat by 35 per cent.
