Fewer dust storms likely
3 Nov 2006

A study for the Grains Council of Australia found that modern farming techniques meant the "dust bowls" that typified previous droughts were unlikely. The use of no-tillage and stubble retention reduces soil erosion, increases soil moisture retention and overall soil health. The NSW Department of Natural Resources said improvements in land management, combined with the large stock turnoff prompted by the drought was keeping topsoil intact for now. Even if the current drought turned into the worst on record, Australia would not see the return of the huge dust storms of the past. In the 1960s conditions were much more dusty than now.
