Stock squad a sign of the times
27 Nov 2006

The police stock squad in New South Wales now has 32 officers, up from two six years ago. Livestock worth more than $100,000 has been stolen across western NSW in the past two months. The rise of rural crime in the late 1990s led to the re-formation of the state's old stock squad. Drought means cattle-stealing rings now operate on a smaller scale but thieves have also turned to fuel, fodder and water. Last year the squad broke two major duffing rings which took the squad across rural NSW and into saleyards in Victoria and Queensland.
