Lamb prices on the slide
19 Dec 2006

The saleyard price of lamb is forecast to fall 15 per cent in 2006/07 as the drought forces farmers to sell livestock, and the saleyard price of beef is expected to slide 13 per cent. The Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics said retail prices of lamb have been high for years, and the bureau's report says the saleyard price should fall to an average of 290 cents a kilogram of dressed weight. ABARE said sales of adult sheep and lambs have been brought forward, especially in NSW and Victoria, as many farmers reduce flock numbers to more sustainable levels.
