Meat margins on the block
20 Dec 2006

The Federal agriculture minister Peter McGauran said he planned to publish the results late next month of an investigation by the nation's consumer watchdog on the meat prices at Coles and Woolworths supermarkets. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission is investigating why beef and lamb prices have not fallen, despite saleyard prices slumping in the past four months as the drought forced farmers to offload stock. Supermarkets margins on beef could gross more than $2000 for a beef carcass and $180 for a lamb at ruling market prices.
