Company faces sheep mistreatment charges 5 Feb 2007
Emanuel Exports and two of its directors will face charges of breaching the Animal Welfare Act 2002, in the Perth Magistrate’s Court today. The charges relate to a shipment of 100,000 sheep from Fremantle to the Middle East in 2004. Industry groups warn that if the company loses the trial live exports could be shut down because exporters would fear similar charges. WA exports 3.4 million sheep annually, 81 per cent of the nation’s sheep exports. The national live export trade injects nearly $2 billion into the economy each year.
