Meat prices fair say ACCC 16 Feb 2007
A government inquiry into Australia’s meat supply chain has found no evidence that farmers and consumers are being ripped off. Last November Peter McGauran, Federal Agricultural Minister, asked the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) to investigate red meat prices received by farmers and those being paid by shoppers. He was concerned that farmers were being paid minimal prices for livestock while consumers were paying record high retail prices for meat. The ACCC’s investigation found that it couldn’t reach a conclusion of anti-competitive behaviour based on short term movements in the margin between livestock and retail prices. "The supply of fresh meat involves a long and complex supply chain," Graeme Samuel, ACC chairman said. The commission said that drought induced increases in the cost of feed grain could have been a contributing factor.
