Demand for roo meat jumps 27 Feb 2007
Data from the Department of Environment and Heritage shows that South Australian roo numbers are at their lowest levels since monitoring began 28 years ago, but the demand for roo meat continues to rise. Australian roo meat is being processed, packed and shipped from SA into supermarkets around the world. Anton Martynenko, Australia Meats managing director, said prices had risen because of an increasing demand for low-fat meat and a supply shortage due to the drought. "Five years ago, the price per kilo of carcass was $0.60-$0.65, now it is around the $1 mark," Mr Martynenko said. "The other factor that affects prices is that there is more demand from human consumption, when five years ago it was mainly processed for pet meat." The kangaroo industry is worth more than $200 million annually and employs more than 4,000 people.
