Top year for lamb and beef

In its latest commodities report the Australian Bureau of Agriculture and Resource Economics (ABARE) has forecast higher returns for lamb and beef producers over the next year. ABARE says saleyard prices for beef cattle are likely to average $3.30 a kilo during 2007/08 while slaughterings are estimated to be down to 8.6 million head, with cattle numbers rising to more than 25 million. Saleyard prices for lamb are expected to jump to an average of $3.70 a kilo, which will be the best return in more than three years.
