Stock prices increase
20 Mar 2007

After rain across NSW and Queensland, sheep prices have nearly tripled in the past two months and cattle prices are expected to continue to rise. Prices for older sheep have risen from $0.65 per kilo in December to around $1.75 a kilo last week, and the price could go as high as $2.00 a kilo later in the year as the nation’s flock decreases. Meat & Livestock Australia’s (MLA) chief market analyst Peter Weeks said the nation’s sheep flock was due to fall 5.5 per cent this year to about 95 million sheep, the lowest level since 1945. MLA expects lamb prices to rise to $4.00 a kilo by the end of the year.
