Camel plague on the horizon 2 Apr 2007
Camels, stricken by the drought, are invading far north communities and causing havoc. Since heavy rains in January about 600,000 camels have arrived in communities searching for water. Station owners have reported damage to land, fences and stock troughs. Ecologist Phil Gee said: "The camels could smell the water in communities and, being very thirsty, entered them during the night, seeking water and did considerable damage. They have been breeding in deserts for decades and the reason they have become an issue is their numbers are significantly affected by drought." Experts have predicted that, if the population keeps growing, in 20 years 4 million camels will roam desert areas in central Australia.
